Involution (kinetic sculpture)

16inch x 16inch x 94inch
Paper, wood, projector, motor, TouchDesigner, MadMapper, 3d printing

The kinetic sculpture Involution encompasses open boxes, inserted with a rotating scroll carrying a roll of paper. Separating the box into two parts, the board at the lower part is equivalent to the margin between virtuality and reality. The real-time video reacted to the pre-recorded typing sound on the upper part is moving brush strokes mimicking the action of typing. With the downward motion of the brush strokes going simultaneously with the releasing of the scroll, the collaborative motions, therefore, simulate the process of a printer in work; although the projected strokes leave no real marks on the paper. The falling paper piles up continuously at the bottom of the box until the paper runs out. The viewer experiences the shifting back and forth between the realms of object and imagery alternately.
